Health Care Administration Career Study

hl3

The coordination and supervision of a variety of the health care aspects is a skill set that professionals are required to obtain through higher education. Training in health care administration is a program that integrates medical and business aspects to create a strong professional career. Students can pursue this profession by first completing health care administration career study and coursework.

Students attending health care administration schools and colleges complete a considerable amount of training due to the work conducted inside the field. Administrators supervise other medical professionals and maintain the management of the entire system at their hospital or clinic. At its most basic administration professionals focus their time and energy on ensuring that the separate aspects of a medical facility run smoothly. Education is offered at every degree level making the profession accessible to all interested students. However, most entry-level careers require employees to have a bachelor’s degree and most employers prefer hiring individuals with a master’s degree.

Students typically use undergraduate training to gain the foundation needed to work through graduate degree programs. The introductory aspects of medical transcription, coding, and billing are learned inside an associate’s degree program. Patient interaction and overseeing patient admissions is covered as students work to complete programs. Students that work through bachelors degree programs will have more career opportunities and the ability to enter masters degree programs. The effective delivery of all health care areas is focused on broadly so students understand the medical and business sides to the field. Courses are taken that teach students how to correctly oversee, develop, and deliver medical care. Courses that are integrated into undergraduate training may include:

*U.S. Health Care System

The system is broken down to examine what professions exist and what responsibilities are carried out inside a facility. Courses like this cover every aspect of today’s healthcare system, which includes long-term care, mental health, tax-support, health promotion, planning, personal coordination, financing, marketing, and more.

*Ethics

The issues facing today’s healthcare system is explored. Course subjects will include euthanasia, abortion, life-prolonging technology, and experimentation. These topics are connected to the aspects of leading a facility and understanding moral philosophy.

Masters degree programs place a high emphasis on building the skills needed to act as leaders inside the profession. The economic policies, marketing practices, and legal issues involved in the administration of health care are learned as students work through programs. Students learn to monitor finances, policies, human resources, and budgeting problems. Students that continue their education at the doctorate’s level of training study the future of the system. Programs focus on taking student’s knowledge so they can oversee the daily processes of an organization and work on creating policies. Possible courses include:

*Health Care Law

The legal issues facing administrators and medical practitioners are explored. Students learn about the regulation factors incorporated into healthcare systems.

*Health Care Information

Students learn to use today’s leading information technology to manage the delivery of medical care. The terminology and practices of information technology are explored in regards to providing patient care.

The Health Care Debate

The health care debate is a hot political topic right now in the United States. Some say we must have free health care available to all because medical care is too expensive for most people. A serious illness can cause bankruptcy. Others say that we can’t afford health care as a nation, and the current health care bill mandates that we all buy insurance, whether we want to or not, thus taking away our freedom of choice.

Both sides have some good points. We need change. But there are other issues that impact our health care quality and expenses that are rarely discussed by the media and in debates.

For example, The standard medical treatments offered in the US is allopathic medicine, which gives you three options: diagnostic tests, drugs and surgery. Those are your only options. Sometimes these are life saving, especially in traumatic injuries. Allopathic medicine shines in heroic, life saving procedures.

But today, most of our illnesses are chronic conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease and arthritis. These conditions don’t go away with pills or surgery. The best our doctors can do is manage the disease with drugs. We don’t really heal, we just manage symptoms so we can get by. Often our quality of life is diminished, and we can have drug side effects, which leads to more drugs to deal with the side effects!

The current health care bill mandates allopathic treatments. But what about alternative medicine? There are many ways to treat the body besides drugs and surgery: herbal healing, chiropractic, energy medicine, homeopathics, vitamin therapy, acupuncture, naturopathy, massage therapy, hypnosis, dietary therapy, mind- body healing, flower essences, and more.

Many people are willing to pay for these natural treatments, out of their own pockets, with no insurance reimbursement. I know, I am one of them! I have always been attracted to natural remedies. I love plants and nature and I feel their healing potential for balance, harmony and wholeness. I’m a whole foods chef. Homepathics, energy medicine and herbs work for me.

With the health care mandates, will I be forced to pay for allopathic screenings, even though I don’t need radiation diagnostics, drugs or surgery? I am convinced that for my body, these remedies can be dangerous. I have a big question mark here, as natural medicine is not addressed at all in the health care bill. It is assumed that we all want allopathic care. Not so!

Another issue rarely addressed is how the quality of our food supply is contributing to the majority of our illnesses.

According to health researcher and best selling author Michael Pollen, 75% of our health care expenses are spent on chronic illnesses, and that’s our true health care crisis. Chronic illnesses caused by poor diet is what is bankrupting the country.

If we want to have true health, we must clean up our food supply. Poor quality foods contributes to diabetes, cancer and heat disease. Today the average grocery store is full of processed foods, genetically modified ingredients in processed foods, MSG, aspartame and other excitotoxins, and hormone filled meat and dairy. And so-called diet foods often are the worst offenders!

Processed foods make us sick and fat, so then we go to the the doctor to get drugs for all our symptoms caused by our poor food choices.

The current US food policy subsidizes corn and soy, which are in almost all fast foods and processed foods as soy lecithin, corn oil, high fructose corn syrup, soy oil, isolated soy protein, and other ingredients from soy and corn. Making processed foods with corn and soy is cheap. So we have the case where a McDonalds burger is cheaper than fresh vegetables. No wonder we are fat!

If we happen to have enough money, we can choose fresh foods, organic food and farmers markets. But not everyone has access to fresh foods, and organics is expensive. Food policy must be changed to encourage fresh food, and we need urban gardens. Fortunately some people are waking up to the importance of fresh food, and some organizations are creating urban gardens and teaching children about where food comes from.

So to truly have a healthy country and affordable health care, we need a new food policy, access to good quality foods, more farmers markets, and the freedom to choose natural remedies.

Fortunately, most of us can buy fresh produce at the grocery, and we can learn from doctors who support natural medicine and are raising awareness about food and natural remedies. We can learn from Dr. Andrew Weil, Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Joseph Mercola. We can research to make informed choices and eat well. It takes some effort and personal research, but we can choose a healthy lifestyle.

The way it is now, the health care debates are leaving out the most important health care issues: food policy, food quality, access to healthy foods, and natural medicines! It is time to look at these issues and broaden the health care discussion.

A Concerned Citizen’s Opinion on Health Care

I am not a certified expert on health care or health insurance. I am not political. I am not a doctor. But I am an American Citizen, I pay for health insurance and I use health care. Based on the very high cost of health care in this country, the rising costs of health care insurance and the proposed solutions that are coming out of our nation’s capital (from both sides of the aisle), I think I am as much of an expert on health care and health insurance as our politicians are.

The fundamental problems Americans are really having are with health care costs, not health insurance. Why is health insurance being regulated and the actual cost of health care not addressed at all?

The fact that an entire industry (insurance) has been created to act as a replacement for affordable health care costs should clearly indicate the real issue is the cost of health care, not the cost or availability of health insurance.

Additionally, the fact that health insurance is a multi-billion industry and one of the most profitable sectors in our economy would seem to indicate that there is plenty of money that Americans have that could go toward paying actual health care costs-especially if the costs themselves were more in line and not so over inflated (yeah, I know the party line that doctors have to charge more because of medical tort-I’ll get to that).

But, without getting into the economics of the statement above, let’s assume that we can’t afford health care. If that is the case, what is the cause?

Let’s separate the problem into two parts*, 1. Cost of treatment and 2. Cost of drugs. So we have two industries here, the Medical community and the Pharmaceutical industry.

Let’s address the Medical Community. Based on simple economics one can deduce that a large part of the problem of medical cost is a matter of supply and demand. There are not enough doctors to take care of the population, thus medical professionals charge more simply because they can.

According to an April 2010 article in the WSJ “Experts warn there won’t be enough doctors to treat the millions of people newly insured under the law (Obama Care). At current graduation and training rates, the nation could face a shortage of as many as 150,000 in the next 15 years, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges…”

If the government is compelled to intervene in the nation’s business for the sake of saving lives, then a better governmental solution to the health care dilemma is to create programs that promote the making of more doctors and placing them where they are most needed.

This could be a voluntary program such as paying for (very) qualified individual’s medical educations. These individuals would get to choose certain specialties (not ones like cosmetic surgery) that were offered by the program guidelines and, upon graduation, would have to “work off” their educational costs by practicing in select parts of the country where they were most needed for a finite period of time. The details of such a program would have to be worked out, but as a solution it directly addresses a large part of the problem, i.e., a shortage of doctors – a shortage of as many as 150,000 doctors in the coming years.

Over the period of one or two (at most) decades we could have enough physicians to not only adequately care for the population, but enough doctors that “supply and demand” would bring medical fees in line with what the general population could afford. Some doctors may have to give up their Porsches’ and limit the number of vacations they take, but they shouldn’t be in that profession if they are only money motivated anyway.

The other major cause of exorbitant health care costs are medications-drugs-pharmaceuticals. Pharmaceutical companies constitute the most profitable industry in America.

The pharmaceutical industry’s lobbying efforts are unparalleled. Public Citizen, a nonprofit consumer organization, estimates that the drug companies have well over 300 paid lobbyists on Capitol Hill – more than one lobbyist for every two members of the U.S. Congress. They spend more than any other industry in political advertising. They spend tens of millions of dollars each year for political advertising to prevent Congress from passing meaningful prescription drug reform.

If there was an area where the government should intervene in order to save lives and in the name of the welfare of this nation, it is in the pharmaceutical industry’s business practices.

These are just my thoughts on the matter; I have never heard these ideas intelligently addressed by any politician in all the endless droning regarding health care that has been going on for the last two years. I know there may be some gaps in what I’ve written and there may be much better solutions than what I quickly jotted down. But the point of this is that we (you) need to really hold our government’s feet to the fire and not be sheep. We need our representatives to really confront the issues, not just glibly parrot talking points that either do nothing or make matters worse.

Do your own research, look into matters that concern and affect you personally. Don’t let the talking heads on T.V. solely shape your view of the world. If something concerns you, look into it and then write about it.

*Medical tort is a third factor that will have to be addressed to reform medical costs. My opinion on this is simple. Great doctors don’t kill or maim people. If we only had great doctors there would be no need for lawsuits. Instead of suing doctors for negligence, simply create a system that takes licenses quickly away from bad doctors. If a doctor kills a patient or ruins the patient’s life through negligence, then he/she loses their license-this will ensure doctor’s standards are always high and that bad doctors get weeded out of the system.

Online Health Care Schools

When pursuing a professional career you can begin by learning about online health care schools and the training possibilities. Accredited higher education and distance learning programs can provide the training that is needed for you to pursue your dream occupation. Before selecting an online school to enroll in, you should make sure that you have obtained all the information necessary to choose the correct career training path. There are numerous possibilities when it comes to preparing for a future in health care.

Option 1

Associate degrees can be obtained through accredited online health care schools to help you pursue an entry level career. This level of training can be completed to help you enter into areas like health education, sciences, and more. Choosing to obtain an associate degree will help you learn a number of specialized skills by providing training in a number of topics. You can obtain this degree by completing two years of accredited schooling, or further your education by pursuing a higher degree.

Option 2

The second option that is available through online learning is a bachelor level degree. You can spend approximately four years training at this level. Accredited online health care schools can prepare you for work as a health information technician, physician assistant, and other occupations. The coursework that will be provided will depend on the path you choose to follow and the profession you decide to enter. Training can be continued at the master degree level if you wish.

Option 3

Pursuing a master degree in health care through an online school will provide you with a number of career prospects. You can learn to work in health information, physician assisting, public health, health sciences, and much more. In order to receive a degree at this level, you will need to complete a total of six years of training. Online training will cover different topics that are relevant to the career you will be entering into. You can study at the doctoral degree level once you receive a master level degree.

Option 4

The fourth option that is available to you in health care is to obtain an online doctorates degree. This can be done by choosing an accredited school or college and completing the required training. Training typically takes eight years for completion and can help you enter a career as a health information technician, educator, and medical professional, or other occupation. Accredited training through distance learning can help you gain the skills for success by allowing you to study various coursework at your convenience.

The coursework that will be covered through online training can vary depending on the career and degree that you wish to pursue. There are a number of areas that must be covered for all levels of training and careers. You can study online for behavioral sciences, environmental health, nutrition, anatomy, and more. In the health care field some programs may require hands on training in addition to online schooling, due to the depth of the subject. Some hands on training may include the study of physical therapy, exercise, wound care, and more.

How To Provide Health Care

This country has been attempting to achieve health care for everyone for decades. Health Care Reform will require timely access at an affordable cost to have any chance of benefiting the American public. The Congress has suggested several proposals of health care reform. The House of Representatives has two health care proposals and both of these plans call for a government-controlled program that the public in town halls across the nation has rebuked.

Approximately 47 million Americans are without health-care insurance sometime during the year. Several million of the uninsured are young people whose health is good and they choose to do without health-care-insurance even though they have the economic-means to purchase it. Millions more of the uninsured are undocumented immigrants. This leaves us with approximately 15 million Americans denied health care either because they lose their job, have a precondition health illness, or they simply do not have the income to afford health care coverage. About 80% of the public is content with their current coverage but they are concerned with the rising cost. Therefore, controlling rising cost and insuring the 15 million uninsured appears to be the main needs of any health care reform proposal.

Government Employees Insurance Company [GEICO] provides federal employees with auto and life insurance. GEICO operates in the private sector and most of GEICO is now available to anyone that wishes to participate in his or her coverage. Employees of the federal government have an excellent medical provider program. The federal employees get their medical insurance in the private sector. The same program available to federal employees should become available to any citizen or American company the same way GEICO is. Low-income people could be provided vouches [pro-rated] based on income to acquire the coverage.

Tort reform is a must in order to control rising cost of medical attention. Doctors, to protect themselves from lawsuits conduct expensive and wasteful medical examinations. These defensive examinations drive medical coverage prices equal to or more than most of the cost needed to provide medical insurance for the 15 million uninsured. Therefore, tort reform must be part of the solution in controlling the spiraling cost of health provision in America.

Small businesses and individuals should be able to purchase health insurance at group rates. Many states only allow a few companies to sell health insurance in their state, thus restricting competition and increasing cost. Individuals need the ability to purchase health insurance from any insurance company nationwide. Insurance companies must be required to provide health care to all people with any precondition illnesses. Also, insurance providers should not be able to drop current coverage for people who develop an illness. Insurance should be transportable for people who lose their job or leave their job. Duplication of a patient’s medical test should not be required when another doctor sees the same patient, unless a second opinion is required or requested. Duplication of medical examinations is a costly and wasteful use of resources. Individuals need the option of purchasing major medical insurance coverage, which surpass a previously agreed amount. Major medical insurance is far less expensive than full coverage insurance.

Controversial Health Care

Health care has become a hot button issue for politicians and voters in the recent past. Some people believe that there should be a universal health care system put into place so that every citizen has access to health coverage. Others think the health care system should stay the way it currently is with private health care companies in control as opposed to the government taking control of health policies.

As with every debate, money plays a role in the controversy behind health care. A public health system would cost hundreds of billions of dollars, which would add additional strain to the government’s already stretched budget. In order to finance a public health care plan, taxes would have to be raised. Some citizens who would carry the bulk of this tax burden don’t think they should have to, since they are not effected by the current care crisis.

The argument for the other side states that the current cost of health insurance is becoming so expensive that many Americans can’t afford to pay their monthly premiums. Also, uninsured Americans are presently costing hospitals millions of dollars every year in unpaid medical bills.

People who are against a universal care plan claim that healthy Americans who take care of themselves should not have to shoulder the burden of Americans who do not take care of themselves. Statistically, wealthier means healthier in America.

Those on the other side of the issue believe that every citizen should have access to safe and affordable health insurance coverage. They claim that this type of health plan is not available to everyone today for various reasons including having one of the many pre existing conditions that automatically disqualify millions of Americans from obtaining health insurance under the current system.

At it’s core, the controversy over health care comes about simply because it’s a subject that effects every single person in the United States, whether they are insured under the current system or not. A universal care plan would also mean more government interference in the individual lives of citizens, which is a subject that many have strong opinions about. Our health policies can determine our quality of life and can even determine whether we live or die. For some, a government run system could not only allow them the freedom to see a doctor whenever they needed to, but it could also mean receiving medical attention that could potentially save their life. Others who are currently covered and have a great insurance policy could see their coverage worsen to a point where their quality of life suffers dramatically.

No End To Rising Health Care

Everyone knows the cost of health care is rising every year with no end in site. Many families are burdened with premiums that are eating up a large portion of their budget. Those with health insurance plans through work are seeing their out of pocket costs grow. Some employees are even paying more for benefits at work then they would on their own.

A RAND Corp study, released in September of 2011, examined the health care an the average American family’s budget from 1999 to 2009. While the average family saw a 30% increase in their income, much of that was wiped out by greater gains in the cost of medical care. Inflation and higher taxes further decimated the gains.

They found that monthly premiums for health insurance grew by 128% over the decade studied. This is well beyond the rate of inflation. Prices on all goods tend to go up over time due to the devaluation of currency called inflation. But when a price for a good goes up faster then inflation, it becomes relatively more expensive then other goods in the economy. This is precisely what is happening with health care. When people are forced to spend relatively more on a good, they feel they are taking a step backward in terms of the living standard.

Making matters worse, many people who receive their health benefits through their employer are seeing lower wage gains. An employer has to take the total cost of an employee into account, and that includes what the employer spends on health benefits. When health care costs increase for the employer, they have actually increased the amount they spend per employee, only it doesn’t feel that way to the worker. The worker is indeed getting a raise, it is just going directly to their health care costs. As health care costs for employers continue to rise, it will put downward pressure on wages.

Health care costs are going up for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, patients now have access to cutting edge – and expensive – medical procedures that were not available before. While these procedures extend people’s lives and well being, they are very expensive and have to be paid for. Additionally, with few patients paying the direct cost of medical care, rather paying their insurance company, the market for medical care becomes distorted.

Another reason for the recent surge in health care costs is the recent Affordable Care Act. One of the new requirements is that employer plans now cover children up to the age of 26. While that may help provide insurance to young adults, it comes at a cost. A survey by the Kaiser Family foundation found that the cost for premiums on employer heath insurance plans increased by 9% in 2010. The increase in premiums has put even more downward pressure on wages during the weak economy.

Many employers are now putting some, if not all, of the cost of health care on to their employees. Many workers are now paying part of the monthly premium and often a large deductible as part of their plan. Often times, if they are young and have no pre-existing conditions, they can purchase private health insurance at a lower price then they are paying for their work plan.

There is no end in sight to rising health care costs. Medical advances will continue, the American population is aging, and reforms in Washington do not seem likely to help reduce the cost of health care.

The Benefits Of Home Health Care

It can be extremely overwhelming to have a family member that requires constant care. A lot of us simply don’t have the time or the facilities to be on-hand at all times even though we might want to. You may experience feelings of guilt that you can’t do all that your family member needs and can’t be with them all the time. However, you are not alone. Today, millions of adults across the word are finding themselves in a position where they are juggling taking care of older relatives or parents and their own lives and career. Many people struggle so you shouldn’t feel ashamed or guilty about your inability to do everything.

It can be hard to get the balance right between doing all you can for your elderly relative and looking after your own needs and this is why many people turn to home health care to help lighten the load. Home health care is a great way to ensure that you get the respite you need while making sure that your relative or parent is still looked after. In many cases, home health care is a necessity for families as it allows the career to get enough rest to ensure that they will be able to look after the elderly relative properly in the future.

There are many benefits involved in hiring home health care. The main advantage is that the person in question will be receiving the very best care possible. These people are trained medical staff and now how to look after your relative or parent properly. They will have years of experience and a wealth of expertise in dealing with emergency health situations so you really can trust them.

As well as providing essential medical care, home health care professionals will give the social interaction that your loved one really craves. No-one likes to be left on their own for long periods of time, and as much as they will love talking to you, they will also really enjoy interacting with other people. For some, home health care is their only connection to the world and without they feel lost.

The chances are you won’t always be available to help your loved one with their meals. If you worry that they aren’t eating nutritiously, that they aren’t eating at all or that they are skipping their medication then home health care could help. A member of staff can help your loved one with meal times and ensure that take their medication at the right times throughout the day.

Home health care workers can also help with any transport issues you may be having with your loved one. If you can’t get to them to take them to the doctors or any other appointment then they can do this for you and make sure that they get their safely.

There are so many more benefits to hiring home health care but the main one being that some of the pressure is taken off you and you can get back on track with your own life and responsibilities. Home health care really is a practical alternative to attempting to take on everything yourself. Home health care really can be a godsend for those people who don’t need continuous nursing help but who want to be cared for in the comfort of their own home. Most people feel most comfortable at home as it is the place where their family and friends can come and visit them and sometimes familiar surroundings can help aid recovery time. Home health care services vary depending on the personal needs of the person needing the care. For some, they just need some companion care whilst other suffer from more serious illnesses and require more complex medical monitoring.

Ways To Reduce Your Health Care

Adjust Your Deductible

The two main component of a health insurance plan are the premium and costs you pay for health care via your co-pay, co-insurance and deductible. The more you agree to pay for your health care, the less your monthly premium will be. Insurance companies know that when people have a financial stake in their own health care bills they tend to be more judicious in their use of medical services. Agreeing to pay a higher deductible, or rate of co-insurance, will result in lower monthly premiums. Sometimes these reductions can be quite significant and if saved will cover most if not all of the cost of the higher deductible.

This approach is less effective for people who use a lot of health care services every year, racking up large bills. However, for people who are generally health and don’t use a lot of health care, they can realize dramatic savings using a high deductible health plan. Plans with high premiums are guaranteed to cost you a lot of money even if you don’t go to the doctor. Plans with high deductibles will only cost you a lot if you actually use medical services.

Use Tax Advantages

There are a few ways to reduce your health insurance costs using the income tax system. The first and most common way is to use a health savings account otherwise known as an HSA. An HSA is a special banking account you are allowed to put pretax money in to spend on health care costs. The money you put into your health savings account does not get taxed as regular income. Depending on the tax bracket you are in, this can be a significant discount on health care costs. Many health care plans do not cover things like maternity, dental services and eye care. However, these services can be paid for out of an HSA.

To be eligible for an HSA, you must have a high deductible health insurance plan that meets the IRS requirements for health savings accounts. Generally you have to carry a high deductible and the plan has to have limits on total out of pocket cots.

If you are facing large health care bills, you may be able to deduct them from your income tax. You are allowed to deduct any medical expenses above 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. There are a wide variety of services that can be included in this amount, even a mileage deduction for transportation to and from the hospital. Make sure to consult a tax advisor if you choose to go this route.

Use your free Preventive Care

All health insurance plans are now required to provide free preventive care, so make sure you use it. Routine checkups and some testing is free for adults. Well baby visits and immunizations are free for children. These are significant benefits so make sure you are taking full advantage of them.

Shop Around

One of the reasons health care has become so expensive is there is little price competition. Don’t be afraid to ask what a doctor charges, especially for planned or expected health care. Some hospitals can be very competitive on price for services like labor and delivery, while others can be quite expensive. Don’t assume health care costs the same everywhere, it certainly does not.

Emergency rooms are especially to be avoided if you are looking to reduce your health care costs. They should only be used for true emergencies. For non life threatening medical issues like ear infections or even a cut requiring stitches, consider using an urgent care or local clinic. The costs of services at these locations can be a tenth of what an emergency room will charge.

Stay Healthy

This may sound like tired advice, but staying out of the hospital is the best way to reduce your costs. Try putting everyday activities in terms of what they may cost you in the long run. Sitting on the couch with a big bowl of ice cream is much more expensive than a nice walk outside. If living a long life isn’t enough motivation to be healthy now, consider that your unhealthy lifestyle will cost you a lot of money in health care costs.
